During our November Zoom call, I listened to our Club Presidents describe all that their clubs are up to during this holiday season during our November Zoom Call made me appreciate the IMPACT our clubs have on their communities. We are as busy as ever collecting coats, scarves, gloves, and hats; putting together food baskets and stocking pantry shelves; volunteering with Toys-for-Tots and other like-minded organizations; hosting community events and fundraisers that expand our reach and allow us to connect with one another in ways that engage our continuing efforts to Serve to Change Lives.
In the midst of all this club activity, we become keenly aware of those who are no longer with us to lend a hand, help us plan, and encourage us to be our best Rotarian selves. One club who lost a shining star recently is the White Mountain Rotary Club. Here is their tribute to Guy Lopez who passed away on October 15, 2021, from complications related to COVID-19.
A longtime club member, Guy served in numerous capacities including as Past President, Secretary, and Board Member. In addition, he recently completed a term as a beloved Assistant Governor. A Portland, Maine native, Guy resided in Berlin, New Hampshire for decades and was a friend to all, dedicating much of his life to the Androscoggin Valley community that he called home. A selfless man, he answered the call of service regardless of the size of the challenge or the number of people it would impact. If it would help a friend or neighbor, you could bet Guy would be there ready to serve with a smile on his face and his trademark quick wit. He mentored many Club Presidents and Board Members, showing firsthand the value of lending knowledge and expertise – a true example of Service Above Self. Guy’s passing leaves our Club with profound sadness, but, also, renewed purpose.
White Mountain Rotary has been the recipient of numerous contributions in memory of Guy by so many who knew and loved his kind soul. Our Club will ensure that we continue the initiatives of which he was so passionate and involved.
As we gather in a variety of ways during this holiday season, I hope we will truly appreciate those with whom we serve in this marvelous organization, and take time to lift a toast to those, who like Guy, made such a generous contribution to our life and work but are no longer with us.
