Literacy

Penny Pillsbury-New Literacy Resources Chairperson for District 7850.

Greetings! I've been in the field of libraries for approximately 45 years and Director of the Brownell Library in Essex Junction Vermont for nearly 22 years. I've been a Rotarian since 1987 and was President of the Essex Rotary Club 1999-2000.  It is no surprise that I have a passion for reading and a passing on the "Reading Bug" to all the Rotary Clubs.

Many clubs have already done inspiring projects and I have no interest in "reinventing" what works. Since most towns and villages in New England and Quebec already have a "literacy center" in their midst-the public library- I'd ask each club's literacy chair to invite their library's director out for coffee or something stronger and ask them what would help them get their patrons reading more. In my library's case, we needed help with more books in Large Print and audio formats. My club gathered a box of them to share between the two libraries in our Town.

My job in the District is to forward to each club's literacy chair or president information on various literacy projects and to challenge clubs to do their utmost in the support of reading around the world and close to home. I'm learning my assignment and would appreciate all your good ideas that I can share around 7850
