District 7850 Connects, Learns and Celebrates at Zone Institute

More than 900 Rotary leaders from 15 nations recently gathered for the Rotary Zone Institute, and District 7850 was proud to be well represented. For our District team, the Institute was much more than several days of meetings and training. It was an opportunity to learn, reconnect with Rotary friends, meet new colleagues from around the world, celebrate service, and return home inspired to do even more for our communities.
The Institute brought together District Governor Nominees, District Governor Elects, District Governors, current Rotary leaders, Rotaractors, and other Rotary leaders for an experience filled with learning and fellowship.

The Rotary International sessions were especially inspiring, featuring RI President Yinka Balbalola, RI President-Elect Larry Lunsford, Rotary International Directors Tom Gump and Marty Helman, Polio Plus Chair Mike McGovern and other leaders from across the Zones.

Throughout the Institute, participants could choose from breakout sessions covering topics including The Rotary Foundation, Polio Eradication, membership growth, building thriving Rotary clubs, measuring impact, and moving the Rotary International membership growth plan from vision to action. Conversations with Rotaractors also provided valuable ideas about how Rotary and Rotaract can continue to work together to build strong, engaged clubs.

Learning, Leadership and Friendship

For Wayne Warner, the Institute was an opportunity to step away from the day-to-day work of Rotary and focus on learning, leadership, and the people who make Rotary special. Wayne spent the first two days participating in his required learning seminars.

“There is something special about being in a room with so many Rotarians who are giving their time and energy to make a difference. The training was valuable, but what I will remember most are the conversations — sitting down with someone from another District or another country and realizing that we share many of the same challenges, hopes, and dreams for Rotary. You come home with new ideas, but also with new friends.”

Bringing the Inspiration Home

Ariel Mondlak was actively involved throughout the Institute, taking part in the sessions and connecting with Rotary leaders from across the Zones and supporting both Wayne and Leon. For Ariel, one of the most meaningful parts of the experience was seeing the many different ways Rotarians are creating impact.

“The stories were what stayed with me. Every person seemed to have a story about a club, a project, a young person, a community, or a life that had been changed because someone in Rotary cared enough to get involved. It reminded me that sometimes we don't see the full impact of what we do. We may see a project completed, but we don't always see the ripple effect. Being together with Rotarians from so many places was a wonderful reminder of why we serve.”

A Special Moment for Leon

Leon Berthiaume participated in the required learning seminars during the first two days as he prepared for his future leadership role. He also experienced a special moment during the Gala Dinner when he was recognized as part of the presentation of District Governor Elects.

“Being recognized at the Gala Dinner was certainly a special moment, but for me, the real highlight was being surrounded by so many people who believe in Rotary and believe in the difference we can make together. The training gave us the tools to lead, but the people gave us inspiration. I came home with a much greater appreciation for the responsibility ahead and an even greater excitement about what we can accomplish together in District 7850.”

District 7850 in Action

District 7850's participation extended throughout the Institute

As an End Polio Now Coordinator and additionally the lead coordinator in our paired Zones. Eric Denu  planned and organized two breakout sessions with his fellow EPNC. One of the breakouts Eric was teamed with Mike McGovern and  held a lively discussion on our Polio eradication efforts.  Eric noted the highlight  was the End Polio Now Vigil. "The vigil was to celebrate our accomplishments, Reflection,Gratitude andHope. To reflect on the journey and the challenge. To have Gratitude for those who have given so much in our efforts. For the Hope that soon Rotary can fulfill its promise to the children of the world -that they will not be affected by this horrible disease called POLIO."  Eric also stated: "Proud of District 7850 leaders creating the continuity that gives our organization its strength. Together as Team we Create Lasting Impact."

Susan Cherry was also an important part of the Institute, assisting with the speakers, schedule and stage  and participating throughout the conference.

For everyone attending from District 7850, the greatest value of the Institute may have been the connections.

There were conversations over meals, between sessions, in hallways, and during evening gatherings. Ideas were exchanged. Experiences were shared. New friendships were formed, and old friendships were strengthened.

And there were stories — stories of Rotary changing lives, strengthening communities, supporting young people, fighting disease, creating opportunities, and bringing people together across borders and cultures.

As the District 7850 team returns to their clubs and communities, they bring with them not only new leadership tools and ideas, but also renewed enthusiasm for Rotary and a deeper appreciation for the incredible network of people who make up Rotary around the world.

The Zone Institute reminded us that Rotary is local in its service, but global in its reach — and that the connections we make with one another can be just as powerful as the projects we undertake.
